Why do Muslims memorize Quran and give so much importance to it?
The Glorious Qur'an is the ultimate beacon of guidance covering all aspects of everyday human life. It is a treasure of divine knowledge and wisdom that made an unparalleled influence on human civilization and history bringing positive transformation in the lives of millions of human beings over since its revelation more than 1400 years ago.
It is the most positive book in the world, it is a proclamation to humanity, it is a fountain of mercy and wisdom, it is a guide to the erring, it is a warning to the heedless, an assurance to those in doubt, it is a solace to the suffering and it is a hope to those in despair.
Memorizing The Qur'an has a lot of virtues and a great reward in the sight of All-Mighty God Allah, may He be exalted. Unlike other scriptures, it is one of the ways Qur'an has been preserved and protected from corruption and fabrication as Allah says in Surah al Hijr Chapter 15 Verse 9:
Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., The Qur'an], and indeed, We will be its guardian.
Allah says in Surah al Qamar Chapter 54 Verses 17,22,32 and 40 that Quran has been made easy to remember:
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember? It is a book that is most read and memorized worldwide. There is no other religious scripture on the face of the earth that is memorized in such a number other than The Glorious Qur'an.
Memorizing the Qur'an is an act of worship through which one seeks the Face of All-Mighty God Allah and reward in the Hereafter. Allah has given special privileges to the one who memorizes the Qur'an in a number of ways in this world and in the Hereafter, for example:
- The learners and the teachers of the Qur'an are considered the best among Muslims Narrated `Uthman:
- He takes precedence over others in leading the prayer.
Memorizing it is not mandatory, but pondering over it and following its each and every commandment is, as Allah says in Surah Saad Chapter 38 Verse 29:
This is a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.
